When a film is based upon a novel, you know it has potential. The story is well enough to cross over into the other medium, but it still requires an excellent screenplay and actors up for the challenge. The Little Traitor makes the transition well, satisfying both requirements. Based on the novel Panther in the Basement by Amos Oz, the movie manages to tell a heartwarming story in troubling times. In 1947 the British occupy Palestine, just months before Israel becomes a state. Proffy is an eleven year old hellbent on kicking the British out his country.
While out after curfew one night, he is seized by Sergeant Dunlop, a British soldier of course. Naturally a friendship between the two ensues. Proffy sees him as a much better father figure than his own cold and distant father. Dunlop admires the brazen and spirited young lad. The relationship is kept under close quarters, but it’s not long before his friends find out where Proffy has been spending his time. He is soon labeled a traitor in the town and faces trial. Alfred Molina (or Doc Oc for Spiderman fans) does a fantastic job as Sergeant Dunlop, as well as Ido Port for one of his few roles.
